At Beta Lyrae we have opted for Technology Standards. Our systems are generally based on open source infrastructure (Java platform, Linux systems, etc.) offering a reduced license cost, but still offering the best performance and highest security standards, as these are widely tested and adopted solutions.

The use of standard technologies brings the use of many funcitonalities and resources to our systems. Some of them are:

• Dynamic generation of open format documents, like PDF, RTF, images, etc.
• Dynamic generation of proprietary format documents, like Microsoft Excel
• Bank data interchange files: Cuaderno 19, Cuaderno 34, etc.
• Estensive use of standard technologies XML and Web Services
• Automatic sending of SMS messages
• Automatic sending of e-mail messages
• Reception of e-mail messages to be automatically processed
• Integration with any database or external system (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Microsoft Access, ODBC...)

Our most common solutions -albeit not the only ones- are web applications

A web application is an application -program- used via a web browser.

User simply opens a defined URL with his/her web browser, and from that moment on, can authenticate, obtain data, enter information, produce reports, share files etc. The web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari ...) is all the software the user needs to use the application being all the system logic and data hosted on servers.

Advantages are many:

• Ease of use: the user is accessing a web page, so learning process is always smoother and faster.
• Security: servers carry out all user and permission control tasks, as well as data storage and access control, thus not leaving any of these security related tasks to workstations.
• Up-to-date information: the fact that data are stored on servers allows users to always view their most updated version.
• Back-up: as data are centrally hosted on servers, back ups are simpler and more reliable.
• Updating: system updating simply involves updating the server (application) software. Thus users will always be accessing the most up to date version of the system, with no need to perform any operation on their workstations.
• Standard technology: apart from possible specific requirements, users will be able to access the system using their preferred web browser and operating system (Windows, Macintosh, mobile phones such as iPhone or Android, tablets like iPad...).
